Move over Champions League The UEFA Europa League is now a more iconic and grown-up looking brand thanks to a new logo, colour palette and bespoke font. The previous Europa League logo and brand toolkit, created inwas in need of a refresh. The brand marque did not carry the stature of the hero Champions League logo, the colours suffered in reproduction, and the logotype, featuring UEFA and Europa League typefaces, did not sit comfortably together.
We re-balanced the trophy shape, finessed the lines around the marque and gave our trophy the power to lift up and through the centre circle. We also gave the logo a more modern look by dropping the glossy 3D finish and replacing it with a flat 2D marque. The orange halo around the trophy was inspired by the golden hue found in the interior of the real trophy. The energy wave looks to express the spirit of this sporting adventure by interpreting key design features of the iconic UEFA Europa League Trophy, with its distinctive, triangular sides with hammered metal detail. The angular shape also informs the structure and movement of the energy wave, giving it the freedom to express the highs and lows of this thrilling adventure. Creating a vibrant kinetic identity which expresses the dynamism of football and the unpredictability of the tournament was key to the development of this brand.
The energy wave moves in dramatic and unexpected ways, mirroring the emotions on and off the pitch; the highs and lows, the twists and turns of the UEFA Europa League.
A comprehensive studio and match graphics system has been developed which has been inspired by the core angular design features of the iconic UEL trophy and the energy wave. It is a strong mixture of modern and classical elements, paying homage to the traditional while looking to the future. A slab serif font with unique angled serifs, the Europa Title, imbues a sense of rawness and attitude to the overall brand experience.

A rich black has been added to the pre-existing colour palette allowing the vibrant oranges to stand out with maximum impact. Numerous versions of the energy wave have been created, each with their own characteristics, which can then be cropped, rotated and flipped.

The challenge for us was to maintain and carry over this prestige into a typographic personality whilst subtly modernising and injecting energy into the brand. The new typeface was intended to be used throughout all Champions League brand communications from publishing, exhibitions, conferences and onscreen tournament and match infographics.
We needed to create a bespoke type design that complemented the existing identity so we began by playing with several possibilities and questioning sans serif, serif and brushstroke styles, drawing type into context and over the top of other brand imagery. We kept returning to the football logo and explored the angles on the points of the stars to see if we could incorporate them into the letterforms. We wanted something quirky and dynamic.
The final result is a quirky and decidedly European sans serif typeface, crisp and sometimes spiky. A distinctive look for the numerals was also of prime importance, and a Cyrillic character set complements the standard Latin alphabet in all fonts.
